We have been discussing a lot the origin of writing direction. I can add a personal observation with Charlie: Even though she has already read many many books with us that used left-to-right order of events in pictures, she often still prefers ordering from right to left. The situation in the picture was funny: We were ordering the cards with numbers, and when I started, I put them in left-to-right from her perspective. When she continued, she re-ordered them so that the 1 was the rightmost, as you can see it in the picture. I believe she did this because it matched the way she counted on her fingers: She counts 1 with her thumb on the right, and the increasing numbers on her fingers go from right to left. She even uses the little finger on the left hand to count the 6 – very consistent from right to left.
